Door & window painting

Doors and windows need different preparation from walls. The material, existing coating and exposure to sun or moisture determine the appropriate work.

Identifying materials and wear

Wood, metal and old varnished surfaces need different treatment. Describe the material and any peeling, rust or damaged wood.

Preparation and finish

Cleaning, sanding and a compatible primer are considered before choosing the finish. Mention any intended change from varnish to opaque paint from the first conversation.

Practical details

The number of leaves, frames, glazing and fittings affects time. Clarify whether both sides need painting and whether the work must be done without removing the leaves.

What is not automatically included

Replacing mechanisms, glazing or unsound parts is separate work. Painting does not replace a necessary repair.

Painting timber doors, windows and cabinets

Existing timber finishes matter: opaque paint, varnish and other coatings require different assessment. Explain whether you want a new colour or want to retain the appearance of the wood. Edges, joints and areas around handles may be more worn than the rest. The quote should identify frames, leaves, both sides where applicable, and removal and refitting of fittings. For cabinets, specify the material: solid timber, veneer and melamine are not interchangeable substrates.

Metal joinery and specialist surfaces

Rust, previous coatings and indoor or outdoor use affect preparation and primer selection. Aluminium or factory-coated frames need a specific compatibility assessment; they are not simply another wall-painting surface. Agree glass protection, ventilation and the time during which doors, windows or cabinets cannot be used. Send photographs of the whole item and worn areas. Suitability for refurbishment and the appropriate system are confirmed after assessment.

Useful answers

How should I describe the size of the job?

Give the number of doors or windows, approximate dimensions, material and how many sides need painting.

Is this the same as wall painting?

No. It needs different materials and preparation time and should appear separately in the quote.
