Translate the work, not just the Greek word
A picture-hook hole and an uneven room wall are different tasks. Patching targets identified defects. A full skim adds a smoothing layer over the agreed surface and involves its associated preparation and finishing stages. More substantial plaster repair may be a separate item.
For an English quote, ask for the method and room locations in plain language. “Wall preparation included” is not enough to tell your agent which surfaces should be treated. A marked photograph or simple room schedule makes the difference visible before you approve anything.
Choose the finish the actual wall needs
Sound walls with isolated defects may only need local repairs. Widespread unevenness or a more demanding finish may justify broader smoothing. Going from a dark colour to white does not, by itself, require full skim coating. Coverage and surface flatness are separate questions.
Strong side light can reveal variations that softer lighting hides. Discuss that light and the planned sheen before choosing the method. A sample area is more useful than a promise that every wall will be “perfect”, especially when you can only inspect remotely.

In an Athens painting quote, “spatoularisma” can hide a big difference in scope.
Make preparation a comparable line item
Ask for the surface area or identified walls, local versus full treatment, proposed material and included finishing stages. Clarify whether sanding where appropriate, primer and final paint are included or priced separately. The same word can otherwise describe very different quantities of labour.
Include protection and dust arrangements if furniture remains. Product drying requirements affect the sequence; they cannot be shortened simply because your flight is booked. Compare two quotations against the same room schedule rather than assuming the cheaper total buys the same finish.
Agree how the result will be reviewed
Request a wide view and a side-lit view of the difficult wall before work. Agree reasonable viewing conditions and the expected finish. Rental listing photographs can highlight a patch that was easy to miss during a short inspection, so explain how the room will be used and photographed.
Skimming cannot solve active damp or an unstable substrate. Those issues need assessment first. Keep the final scope and any agreed sample record with the job photographs so the person accepting the work in Athens knows what you approved from abroad.
Three questions before you start
Is spatoularisma the same as replastering?
Not necessarily. A thin smoothing layer and substantial plaster repair are different scopes. Ask for the actual method and surfaces.
Does a dark-to-white repaint need a full skim?
Not simply because the colour changes. The existing surface and the proposed coating system determine the preparation.
Can skim coating cure damp?
No. An active moisture source needs assessment and resolution before decorative finishing.
