Wall filling & skim coating

Filling usually corrects individual imperfections. Skim coating smooths a broader surface. Not every wall needs the same preparation.

Local repairs or full surface smoothing?

Small holes, surface defects and uneven areas are assessed individually. Skim coating an entire wall should not be confused with a few local repairs in a quote.

Repairs before colour

The sequence depends on substrate strength and existing materials. Sanding, dust removal and suitable primer are considered as part of the preparation.

Cracks or damp

Covering a mark does not prove the cause has been resolved. Recurring cracks or active damp need assessment before cosmetic repairs.

What affects the cost

Total area, extent of damage and intended finish determine the work time. Specify whether you want local repairs or smoothing across all walls.

Wall skim coating in renovations and new spaces

Renovation starts with assessment of the existing surface. Old paint, adhesive residues and unstable areas can affect adhesion. In a new space, the substrate must meet the requirements of the selected material. Filling a hole is not equivalent to smoothing an entire wall. Ask for the area and intended finish to be described before painting. Light falling along a wall can make small imperfections more visible, so the intended lighting is useful when assessing the result.

Sanding, dust control, primer and final paint

Skim coating is preparation; it does not automatically include the complete painting job. Agree whether sanding, dust removal, primer and finish coats are included. In an occupied apartment, identify furniture and possessions needing protection and discuss separation of the work area. Recurring cracks need investigation before they are covered again. For an initial estimate, send an overview of the wall and close-ups of imperfections, together with the location and approximate dimensions.

Useful answers

Is skim coating always needed before painting?

No. If the existing surface is sound and smooth, local repairs may be enough. This depends on its condition.

Will filling fix a recurring crack?

Not on its own. The reason it keeps appearing needs to be checked before choosing a repair.
